Carol Moseley Braun Calls Rival Ex-Crack Head
The Great Afghan Bank Heist
In the spring of 2009, as the reëlection campaign of President Hamid Karzai was gathering momentum, a group of prominent Afghan businessmen met for breakfast at the presidential palace to see the candidate. Among them was Khalil Ferozi, the chief executive officer of Kabul Bank, a fast and freewheeling financial institution that had brought together some of the most colorful and politically well-connected Afghans in the country, including one of President Karzai’s own brothers.

Getting over redundancy
? Is my voluntary sector experience valid in the private sector?
? How can I sell myself with such narrow experience?
Every Monday we publish the problems that will feature in this Saturday's Dear Jeremy advice column in the Guardian Work supplement, so readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy's own insights.
Here are this week's dilemmas ? what are your thoughts?
Problem one: Is my voluntary sector experience valid in the private sector?
I've worked in the voluntary sector for 16 years and am CEO of a small charity that, for a combination of reasons, will not survive the cuts. It will close within the next 12 months.
As the potential opportunities within the voluntary and public sectors are decreasing, many people will be looking to move into the private sector. I have read a few Dear Jeremy letters that have addressed a wish to move from the private into the voluntary sector but not the other way around. How is this viewed within the private sector?
I spoke to someone within the private sector about this recently and he told me that the skills weren't at all transferable, which didn't fill me with optimism. How can I make a CV that is totally focused within the voluntary sector attractive to the private sector, and where would a voluntary sector CEO fit within a private company? I hope you and your readers can help.
Problem two: How can I sell myself with such narrow experience?
I was made redundant without any prior inclination that such a devastating event would occur. Having joined my employer immediately after school, I have just completed 27 years' monogamous service. Currently I am experiencing feelings akin to bereavement, and thus far have only just reached the grief stage after shock and denial.
My specific problem ? other than having just bought a house ? is that loyalty is now a devalued workplace currency, and since I have no accompanying professional or academic qualifications (no degree or A-levels), and only one employer on my CV at the age of 47, how can I obtain another job?
My previous role entailed organising financial services professional exams, courses, book sales and library work. Admittedly the work never truly engaged me, and subsequent promotions were not forthcoming ? although I always scored well in appraisals and diligently strove to succeed.
Although the pay was dispiritingly low, I have recently written material for Radio 4 comedy shows, I write a monthly humorous column for the Oxford Times, I've had a book on Oxford Student Pranks published in the autumn and occasionally present the Eccentric Oxford Walking Tour, but I couldn't ever foresee this earning me enough even just to pay my council tax. So how do I go about persuading prospective employers that they should interview me?
What are your thoughts?
? For Jeremy's and readers' advice on a work issue, send a brief email to dear.jeremy@guardian.co.uk. Please note that he is unable to answer questions of a legal nature or reply personally

What CES had to Offer for the New Computer Screen
Life was never meant to be viewed through a little window, and I believe neither was technology. Look at TVs, computers, cell phones: all of these technologies have increased their screen size so that we can see a bigger picture. I’m always thinking ahead about what great technology is still to come. One of my interests is in having giant computer screens and having technology get me out of my seat, literally.
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is known for its innovation. At this year’s CES, two products stood out to me concerning innovation in computer screen technology:
Samsung and LG’s Flexible AMOLED Displays
AMOLED uses organic materials to transmit light. Flexible AMOLED displays have popped up at CES before, but what made this year different is the material they are using to make these flexible displays: plastic. In the past, these displays were made of glass, which meant that the display was flexible only once and after that it would break. Considering what is available at this year’s show, it isn’t too hard to imagine that a computer screen will soon be on these displays.
Microsoft Surface 2
Any product that will eventually make the computer mouse obsolete is good in my book. Microsoft Surface 2 is an improvement on the first Microsoft Surface, which was a touch screen tabletop, connected to a bulky cabinet in order to hold cameras. The cameras read your fingers, replacing the computer mouse with touch. Now Microsoft Surface goes beyond a tabletop by reducing the thickness to just four inches, so it can be mounted on a wall. I love how big it is at 40 inches. With PixelSense technology, the Microsoft Surface not only reads your hands, but can also read text written down on a piece of paper and then place it on the screen. This interaction of actual paper with a computer screen could go beyond scanning, as shown at CES where they had a flyer for the Royal Bank placed on the screen, showing if a customer’s flyer was the winner or not in a drawing. PixelSense can read any object placed on the screen.
My dream would be for these two technologies to be used together to create large screens (my preference being 30ft by 10ft) that can be mounted anywhere with flexible AMOLED technology and that I can touch with PixelSense so I don’t have to sit down. Here’s the interesting thing about these two pieces of technology right now: Samsung is involved in both. Hmm…

Skullcandy Joins the IPO Party
This should certainly be music to the ears of IPO watchers:
Just a day after professional social network site LinkedIn submitted its paperwork for a public offering, headphone maker Skullcandy filed its S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission to go public.
With the economic recovery on firmer ground, the IPO market has once again opened up. Earlier this week, IPOs from online publisher Demand Media and consumer information provider Nielsen were both well received by investors, pricing above their expected ranges. There’s also the ongoing buzz about Groupon and Facebook joining the pipeline in the not-too-distant future.
As a three time Inc. 500 company, we’ve been privy to parts of Skullcandy’s financials for some time, but the new filing gives us a much more detailed look. (If you notice a difference between the revenues reported by Inc. and those in the S-1, we list gross sales, while the filing shows net.)
Of particular note is the increased revenue between 2008 and 2009 (up 47 percent), but the steep decline in profitability (net income fell 73 percent over the same period). The main culprit in the drop off is a pretty hefty interest expense item associated with $25 million in debt the company issued in February 2009, which bears an 11 percent interest rate. Skullcandy has reduced that amount outstanding to $7.3 million, but issued another $16.5 million in debt at the end of last year. Not surprisingly, part of the proceeds from the public offering will be used to pay off this debt. No word yet on the size of the offering, though the company spelled out another $20 million in items it needs to pay down. Anything raised in excess of those expenses will go to working capital and general corporate purposes.
Located in Park City, Utah, Skullcandy was founded by Rick Alden in 2003, targeting its products exclusively to skateboarders and snowboarders. Though the products have since gone mainstream (Target and Best Buy each accounted for more than 10 percent of Skullcandy’s net sales in 2009, according to the S-1), the focus remains on the alternative sports market.
“Our core has expanded from skateboard and snowboard shops to include stores that sell sneakers, bikes, vinyl records, and electric guitars,” Alden told Inc. in 2008. “Those account for only 10 percent of our revenue, but it's the most important 10 percent, and we have to protect it. So we sponsor boarders, surfers, and BMX bikers. One hundred percent of our marketing efforts focus on that segment.”

SHIFT: Freedom! is a fun, intelligent platformer -- Time Waster
And really, the first thing I noticed about SHIFT: Freedom! is that learning how to play was fun. The built-in tutorial walks you through a couple of levels, but you still have to think a little bit, and it's very fast.
As you might have gathered from the title, this is one platformer that doesn't emphasize crazy speed and agility. It's more cerebral - you have to figure your way out of every level using just what you see on the screen (no extra "tools" or anything like that).
It's a lot of fun to play, and due to the way it "teaches" you, you keep finding out new things you can do during the first few levels. And by the time you're done with those, you might just be hooked!

Customers Who Eat and Run
Believe it or not, one of the hottest trends at swish restaurants these days is the good old-fashioned "dine and dash." Seemingly respectable-looking diners partake of lavish tasting menus and pricey bottles of champagne—and then run off, leaving nary an Amex Platinum in their wake. According to The Independent, there's been an uptick in these incidents at high-end restaurants in London. And the fact that it's a relatively easy crime to commit makes it a danger for U.S. restaurants as well.
"It's is always very hard to identify the people that are going to do this—they look civilized and well-dressed," said Atul Kohhar, chef of the Michelin-starred Benares, which has experienced two dine-and-dash occurrences in the last six months. What's more, police usually have bigger fish to fry, making busting those on a wanton foie-and-beluga spree low on the priority list. So short of putting ankle bracelets on their Krug Grand Cuvees, what's a restaurateur to do?
"We have eaten the cost in the past," says Paul McLaughlin, co-owner of Oceana restaurant in New York City. "One customer who came in and 'drank and dashed' a few months back, still comes in for meals regularly. So we dropped the issue." In the meantime, think twice before that table of 8 goes out for a cigarette break en masse after dessert.

What is Your ?Why??
Do you know why you are in business for yourself? Is it the freedom? The ability to stay home with your family? Perhaps it’s because you had a great idea and knew that you could make lots of money implementing it?
These are all good reasons, and common amongst the collection of wonderful entrepreneurial minds in this world - especially the quest for freedom. But is that really, truly, honestly, your “why”?
We spend so much time trying to break the code on the “how” of business success that we forget about our “why”. Why is the “why” important? Well, because it is what drives the passion, the soul and the purpose in your heart and business.
I’ve observed that, of all of the successful people I have coached, the happiest and most successful are the entrepreneurs who are in business for a reason larger than themselves. I believe that this is because they are driven, not by fear or need, but by passion and desire; something much deeper and more meaningful. Oftentimes, they discover their “why” through the coaching relationship and things just seem to fall into place once this awareness has occurred. It’s rather amazing to witness. Let me give you some examples of the meaningful “why,” including my own:
Joan always knew that she had a passion for helping others succeed in business, but never fulfilled her desire on a large scale. After years of struggle she realized that her business was the gateway to something far greater. If she was hugely successful she could help other women learn how to achieve their dreams; she would have the answers, not just for herself, but for them. Once Joan allowed herself to be driven by this higher purpose she was able to let go of her fears and over-analyzing and drive her profits to the top. Today, Joan happily speaks to audiences, has appeared on national television and helps business owners understand and achieve their goals.
Beth lives a “green” life and wants to support others in learning how to respect the planet on which we live. She’s never lost sight of her “why” and chose jewelry design to carry out her mission. She creates beautiful, earth-friendly jewelry and donates a portion of her proceeds to a like-kind cause. She blogs and speaks about earth-friendly living and helps others grow as her business grows.
“But what if I don’t have a why,” you might ask. I think you do. Mine didn’t actually reveal itself until I was about 2 years into my coaching career, but it was always a part of who I am.
When our children were only 8 years old, my husband passed away. Some of the most amazing resources and support came from people I hardly even knew. I never realized how powerful a kind gesture from a near stranger could be. It was at that time I realized how awful it is to feel alone in decision-making and life in general and what a little help and support can make. As years went by I developed a passion for supporting people who felt “alone”. Business owners all too often fall into that category and a coach can make all the difference. So my “why” is that no one should ever feel alone. I am driven by a desire to create resources and support for, not just my one-to-one clients, but for millions of entrepreneurs around the world. Even so, I didn’t truly realize that I was on that path until I explored my “why” with intention and awakened to the fact that I was actually fulfilling a passion through my business. That awareness has allowed me to grow in so many ways.
Getting to your “why”So what’s your why and how are you fulfilling it? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What does success mean to me?What am I most passionate about? In what way is my business an extension of my passion? If I could make a difference for anyone or anything, what would it be?What are some small steps I can take to begin to make that difference? How can I support or contribute to a cause, organization, individual or group that stands for something that is important to me? Is my passion represented in my company culture, mission and vision?Do you know your why? Please, share it with us here!
If you would like to discover your why and learn how to drive your business with this powerful engine - and much more - join me, along with my peer and fabulous marketing coach, Terrie Annechino, for the next Million Dollar Mindset Group Coaching program. It begins on Tuesday, February 1st and doesn’t stop at the “why”!

Gmail now with display ads, just like Hotmail and Yahoo
Google seems to have forgotten all about the above, or simply shows that it has never cared, since reports are coming in that it's running an experiment involving display ads in Gmail. For now, Google says, these will only appear next to messages that are, themselves, heavy in image content. How long before that changes and we'll struggle to even notice our inbox because it will be drowned in display ads on all sides? It's not clear. Nor is it certain that this experiment will ever result in widespread use of display ads on Gmail. But, however limited in scope, this move does represent an interesting and rather big shift for Gmail.

Consumers Wary of Location-Based Services
Location-based ads prompt nearly half of customers to take action, says a new study from Microsoft.
The software giant commissioned research in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, the U.S. and Canada, and found that 18 percent of consumers (22 percent in the U.S.) have seen an ad based on their location. Of those, 46 percent have taken action, including redeeming the coupon offered or visiting the store. Nine in 10 users think location-based ads are useful.
These findings were part of a larger study of whether consumers are sanguine or spooked by anything location-related.
The good news is that nearly all people who use location-based services think they're valuable. Still, many users think the risks outweigh the benefits.
Just over half of respondents (51 percent) had shared their location through services such as Facebook Places and Foursquare.
Of U.S. users, 99 percent thought the services were useful, but more than half (52 percent) said they were concerned about the potential loss of privacy. The most commonly used services: "practical" services such as GPS (70 percent of users), weather alerts (46 percent), traffic alerts (38 percent), and finding a restaurant (38 percent).
Just 5 percent of those surveyed use location-based services every day, though the number jumps to 10 percent in the U.S. (Japan, for the record, had the highest awareness of Facebook Places et al, the highest general usage, and the fewest privacy concerns.)
The major users of location-based services in all countries: young men aged 18-34.
Two-thirds of users prefer using free location-based service apps. Just 27 percent of U.S. users say they'd pay for the service, though Americans were the most willing to pay of any country surveyed. (Canadians were the least willing, with 16 percent saying they'd pay.) The average amount consumers are willing to fork over: less than $10.
Other findings: Fewer than one in five users tried services that tell others where they are, or finds the location of others.
The most popular services were Google Latitude or Places (52 percent of those surveyed had tried them) and Facebook Places (50 percent). Fifteen percent of U.S. users had tried Foursquare – the highest usage of any country.

How to change the screen time-out on Android
Earlier today, I was helping my brother set up his new Motorola Defy. While the phone itself was quite nice (and tough), the screen kept turning off after just a few seconds of idle time. It was starting to drive us crazy, but after quickly poking through the settings we fixed it. Here's how:
1) Go to Settings > Display
2) Tap Screen timeout
3) Tap the timeout value you wish to use
Of course there's a trade-off between convenience and battery life - having the screen time out after two whole minutes can be nice, but your battery may not last very long. And while you're here, you can also easily adjust your display's brightness.
This tip wraps up this week's Tips series. What would you like to see next week? Let me know in the comments!

Recap 2010: Gran Premio d?Italia TIM
Mugello played host to the World Championship on the first weekend of June as round four called on the beautiful Tuscan countryside, and with the weather remaining fine throughout the three days it was an eventful stage in Italy.
The official pre-event saw some World Championship riders attempt to make a traditional Italian pizza, although their dough skills failed to match up to their abilities on board a motorcycle! The serious business began later that afternoon as a quintet of the MotoGP stars ? Nicky Hayden, Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Simoncelli ? attended the pre-race press conference as anticipation for the race grew.
The time for talking was soon over as the on-track action commenced and it was reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi who took control of the opening practice session, setting the fastest time as Casey Stoner experienced a difficult start to the session.
