Reagan, Christie, & Those Unelected Elites

Kevin Mooney, Am. Spectator
As he transitioned away from New Deal liberalism to Goldwater conservatism in the 1950s, Ronald Reagan began to speak out against "the enemy within" in a series of powerful speeches that celebrated America's founding principles. In his commencement address at William Woods College in 1952, and at Eureka College, his alma matter, in 1957, the future president described America as a divinely inspired, historically distinct country. This idea of "American exceptionalism" also figured into the 1964 "Time for Choosing" speech, Reagan delivered on behalf of Sen....

Michael Gove hits back in row over leaking of Ed Balls 'plot' papers

Education secretary confident his office will be cleared of breach as sources suggest Labour feuding is behind the leak

Michael Gove, the education secretary, is confident his office will be cleared of leaking the documents that implicate Ed Balls in a plot to remove Tony Blair after Whitehall sources indicated that an internal Labour feud is behind the breach of security.

As the Cabinet Office released details of an investigation into the alleged leak from the education department, sources close to Gove accused Balls of demanding an inquiry to deflect attention from the Labour feuding.

A source close to Gove told the Guardian: "Like with [former Haringey council children's services boss] Sharon Shoesmith, Ed Balls is pathetically trying to blame officials. He should ask friends how these things got leaked."

Gove fought back after the cabinet secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, sanctioned an investigation into the leak in the early hours of Friday morning after a complaint from the shadow chancellor. Balls also contacted David Bell, permanent secretary at the education department, late on Thursday night after the Daily Telegraph published the documents. They show that Balls was the key figure in "Project Volvo", designed to unseat Blair and prepare Gordon Brown for the Labour party premiership.

Balls told the BBC on Friday: "The last time I saw them [the papers] was when they were on my desk in the [education] department. I don't know how they were taken and got to the Telegraph."

The papers were not among correspondence sent to his Commons office after the election, by which time Balls had stood down as education secretary. Bell formally ordered the inquiry after consulting O'Donnell.

Senior figures in Whitehall are highly sceptical of the shadow chancellor's claim that he left sensitive documents, including annotations by the then-prime minister, in a file on his desk in his department as he headed off to campaign in last year's general election. The formal explanation of the inquiry indicated that O'Donnell has not accepted Balls's the claim that the documents were in the department, let alone that they were then leaked by an official or someone from the office of his successor, Gove.

The prime minister's spokesman explained the investigation, saying: "The Cabinet Office is looking into, first, whether these papers were in the possession of any department. And second, if so, whether there have been any breaches of document security within government."

One Whitehall source said of the Balls complaint: "This all has a familiar ring to it. Ed Balls loves inquiries."

The source speculated that Balls may have leaked the documents himself. "This has the feel of desk-clearing about it. Ed Miliband is struggling a bit, Ed Balls must be eyeing up the Labour leadership. So why not get all this out on his terms so this stuff is not released at a more difficult moment?"

Gove and other senior Tories have a different view. They believe that a former member ? or members ? of the Brown circle leaked the papers to damage Balls at the moment that he is emerging as a pivotal figure in the Labour party.

Greg Hands, parliamentary aide to George Osborne, tweeted: "Worth noting how leaky Labour has become under the Two Eds, with a steady stream of docs seemingly from both their offices in the last year."

Balls insisted this morning that the documents, from 2005 and 2006, do not show that he was plotting against Blair. He told the BBC: "After 2004 and then on there was a discussion between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and others, which included myself, about how we manage that stable and orderly transition. There was discussions, there was negotiations.

"I lived through these years. I know what happens when people allow personalities and debates and fights to get in the way of the national interest. I was part of trying to hold things together in difficult times. There are important lessons to learn, people want to know that the Labour party has learned them. We have, 100%. That is why we are not going to be diverted by these kind of false and mendacious allegations. The idea that there was a plot or a coup is untrue and not justified by these papers."

In an attempt to implicate the Tories in the leak, he said the publication was "an attempt to take attention away from what is going on in this country".

Ben Spies Signs Contract Extension with Yamaha

Yamaha has signed Ben Spies to a one-year contract extension to continue racing on its MotoGP factory team in 2012.

The extension comes after Spies, currently seventh in the Championship standings, recorded his first podium finish of the 2011 season, a third place result at Catalunya. Spies earned two other podium finishes in 2010 in his Rookie of the Year winning debut in the class with the Tech 3 satellite team. Prior to that, Spies won the 2009 World Superbike Championship for Yamaha.

?I am very happy to say that I will remain a part of the Yamaha family,? says Spies, ?and that I will continue in the MotoGP series for 2012. This is a privileged time of my career riding for the most successful team in recent years at the very highest racing level. Yamaha has been great in supporting me through World Superbike and on to MotoGP and I want to thank them for all they have done, and for giving me their trust to continue in MotoGP in 2012.?

Spies? 2011 season has been almost a mirror of his 2010 campaign. Spies gained 36 points after five rounds in both seasons, including a podium in round five both times and DNFs in the second and third rounds. The sixth round takes place this weekend, June 10-12 at Silverstone in the U.K., where Spies earned his first career MotoGP podium with a last-lap pass on Ducati?s Nicky Hayden.

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Phone-hacking scandal widens to include Kate Middleton and Tony Blair

MP calls for expanded investigation as list grows of those allegedly hacked by Jonathan Rees for News International

Pressure is building on the Metropolitan police to expand their phone-hacking inquiry to include a notorious private investigator who was accused in the House of Commons on Wednesday of targeting politicians, members of the royal family and high-level terrorist informers on behalf of Rupert Murdoch's News International.

Guardian inquiries reveal that the former prime minister Tony Blair is among the suspected victims of Jonathan Rees, who was involved in the theft of confidential data, the hacking of computers and, it is alleged, burglary. According to close associates of Rees, he also targeted:

? Jack Straw when he was home secretary, Peter Mandelson when he was trade secretary and Blair's media adviser Alastair Campbell;

? Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex, and the Duke and Duchess of Kent, all of whom are said to have had their bank accounts penetrated, and Kate Middleton when she was Prince William's girlfriend;

? The former commissioner of the Metropolitan police, Sir John Stevens, and the current assistant commissioner, John Yates, who later supervised the failed phone-hacking inquiry for 19 months;

? The governor and deputy governor of the Bank of England, whose mortgage account details were obtained and sold.

Rees, who worked for the Mirror Group as well as the New of the World, is also accused of using a specialist computer hacker in July 2006 to steal information about MI6 agents who had infiltrated the Provisional IRA. According to a BBC Panorama programme in March, Rees was commissioned by Alex Marunchak, then the News of the World's executive editor, to hack the information from the computer of Ian Hurst, a former British intelligence officer in Northern Ireland who had stayed in contact with several highly vulnerable agents. Marunchak has denied the allegations.

The Guardian has previously identified other suspected targets of Rees, including Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, George Michael, Linford Christie, Gary Lineker, Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, and the family of the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

None of these cases has been officially confirmed or even investigated. With many of them, it is not yet clear precisely what form of surveillance Rees and his agency, Southern Investigations, were using. Answers may lie in the "boxloads" of paperwork the Metropolitan police are believed to have seized from Rees.

But the Labour MP Tom Watson told the prime minister on Wednesday the head of the Operation Weeting inquiry into the News of the World's investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, had told him that it may be beyond its terms of reference to investigate this evidence.

"Prime minister, powerful forces are attempting a cover-up," Watson said. "Please tell me what you intend to do, to make sure this doesn't happen."

While Glenn Mulcaire worked for the News of the World as a full-time employee from 2001, Rees worked freelance for the Mirror Group and the News of the World from the mid 1990s. His agency was earning up to 150,000 a year from the News of the World alone. In 1999, he was arrested and sentenced to seven years for conspiring to plant cocaine on a woman so that her husband would get custody of their children.

After his release in May 2004, the News of the World continued to hire him under the editorship of Andy Coulson, who went on to become David Cameron's media adviser. Rees's targets during this period included Prince William's then girlfriend, Kate Middleton.

On Wednesday, a News International spokesperson said: "It is well documented that Jonathan Rees and Southern Investigations worked for a whole variety of newspaper groups. With regards to Tom Watson's specific allegations, we believe these are wholly inaccurate. The Met police, with whom we are co-operating fully in Operation Weeting, have not asked us for any information regarding Jonathan Rees. We note again that Tom Watson MP made these allegations under parliamentary privilege."

Scotland Yard is believed to have collected hundreds of thousands of documents during a series of investigations into Rees over his links with corrupt officers, and over the 1987 murder of his former business partner, Daniel Morgan. Charges of murder against Rees were dismissed earlier this year.

Daniel Morgan's brother, Alastair, who has been gathering information for a book, told the Guardian he was aware from his own investigations and from material revealed in court hearings that the Metropolitan police was holding "boxloads" of evidence on Rees's activities. Guardian inquiries suggest that this paperwork could include explosive new evidence of illegal news-gathering by the News of the World and other papers.

According to journalists and investigators who worked with him, Rees exploited his position as a freemason to make links with masonic police officers who illegally sold him information on targets chosen by the News of the World, the Sunday Mirror and the Daily Mirror. One close contact, Det Sgt Sid Fillery, left the Metropolitan police to become Rees's business partner and added more officers to their network. Fillery was subsequently convicted of possession of indecent images of children.

Some police contacts are said to have been blackmailed into providing confidential information. One of Rees's former associates claims that Rees had compromising photographs of serving officers, including one who was caught in a drunken coma with a couple of prostitutes and with a toilet seat around his neck. Rees claimed to be in touch with corrupt Customs officers, a corrupt VAT inspector and two corrupt bank employees.

An investigator who worked for Rees claims he was commissioning burglaries of public figures to steal material for newspapers. Southern Investigations has previously been implicated in handling paperwork which was stolen by a professional burglar from the safe of Paddy Ashdown's lawyer, when Ashdown was leader of the Liberal Democrats. The paperwork, which was eventually obtained by the News of the World, recorded Ashdown discussing his fears that newspapers might expose an affair with his secretary.

The Guardian has confirmed that Rees also used two specialist "blaggers" who would telephone the Inland Revenue, the DVLA, banks and phone companies and trick them into handing over private data to be sold to Fleet Street.

One of the blaggers who regularly worked for him, John Gunning, was responsible for obtaining details of bank accounts belonging to Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex, which were then sold to the Sunday Mirror. Gunning was later convicted of illegally obtaining confidential data from British Telecom. Rees also obtained details of accounts at Coutts bank belonging to the Duke and Duchess of Kent. The bank accounts of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, are also thought to have been compromised.

The Guardian has been told that Rees spoke openly about obtaining confidential data belonging to senior politicians and recorded their names in his paperwork. One source close to Rees claims that apart from Tony Blair, Straw, Mandelson and Campbell, he also targeted Gaynor Regan, who became the second wife of the foreign secretary, Robin Cook, the former shadow home secretary, Gerald Kaufman; and the former Tory minister David Mellor.

It is not yet known precisley what Rees was doing with these political targets, although in the case of Peter Mandelson, it appears that Rees obtained confidential details of two bank accounts which he held at Coutts, and his building society account at Britannia. Rees is also said to have targeted his brother, Miles Mandelson.

Separately, for the News of the World, Glenn Mulcaire was hacking the voicemail of the deputy prime minister, John Prescott, Straw's successor as home secretary, David Blunkett, the media secretary, Tessa Jowell, and the Europe minister, Chris Bryant. Scotland Yard has repeatedly refused to reveal how many politicians were victims of phone hacking, although Simon Hughes, Boris Johnson and George Galloway have all been named.

The succesful hacking of a computer belonging to the former British intelligence officer Ian Hurst was achieved in July 2006 by sending Hurst an email containing a Trojan program which copied Hurst's emails and relayed them to the hacker. This included messages he had exchanged with at least two agents who informed on the Provisional IRA ? Freddie Scappaticci, codenamed Stakeknife; and a second informant known as Kevin Fulton. Both men were regarded as high-risk targets for assassination. Hurst was one of the very few people who knew their whereabouts. The hacker cannot be named for legal reasons.

There would be further security concern if Rees's paperwork confirmed strong claims by those close to him that he claimed to have targeted the then Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir John Stevens, who would have had regular access to highly sensitive intelligence. Sir John's successor, Sir Ian Blair, is believed to have been targeted by Glenn Mulcaire, although it has not been confirmed that Mulcaire succeeded in listening to his voicemail. Assistant commissioner John Yates was targeted by Rees when Yates was running inquiries into police corruption in the late 1990s. It appears that Yates did not realise that he himself had been a target when he was responsible for the policing of the phone-hacking affair between July 2009 and January 2011.

Targeting the Bank of England, Rees is believed to have earned thousands of pounds by penetrating the past or present mortgage accounts of the then governor, Eddie George, his deputy, Mervyn King, who is now governor, and half-a-dozen other members of the monetary policy committee.

According to police information provided to the Guardian in September 2002, an internal Scotland Yard report recorded that Rees and his network were engaged in long-term penetration of police intelligence and that "their thirst for knowledge is driven by profit to be accrued from the media".

Operation Weeting has been investigating phone hacking by the News of the World since January. The paper's assistant editor, Ian Edmondson, chief reporter, Neville Thurlbeck, and former news editor James Weatherup have been arrested and released on police bail.

On Wednesday, A police spokesman said: "[We] can confirm that since January 2011 the MPS [Metropolitan police service] has received a number of allegations regarding breach of privacy which fall outside the remit of Operation Weeting. These allegations are currently being considered."

Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

The Gmail team has been busy behind the scenes of late addressing a plentiful supply of little niggles. First up on the chopping block is the annoying (or amazing, depending on how you look at it) auto-save contacts feature, which has been the bane of many-a-contact neat-freak (myself included) since its inception. Now Google has finally added an option to turn off the auto-save contacts feature. It's available in the 'General' tab of Gmail settings going forward, and should please anyone who syncs their phone contacts with Gmail contacts.

Gmail will also now point out any incorrectly entered email addresses visually, rather than simply telling you something was wrong. This will be handy for anyone addressing emails to a long list of recipients, as it'll be a lot easier to spot the typo. A few of Gmail's error messages have also migrated from pop-ups to in-window messages that allow you to action things more easily, while still getting on with the task in hand. Gmail will also now send you back to the message you were looking at if you happen to create a filter for 'messages like these,' a nice tweak that should save you some time.

If you're into your keyboard shortcuts, Gmail now has one turned on by default and that's the shortcut help key. Hit 'shift' and '?' together and you'll be presented with an overlay detailing all the keyboard shortcuts available to boost your productivity. Last but not least, the 'refresh' link is now a button on to match the rest of the buttons on the toolbar. Consistency in UI is important for a decent user experience, and now Gmail conforms just a little bit more.

To check out these little changes, all you have to do is head to your Gmail and have a look around the UI. Many people rely daily on Gmail in the browser, and these small, but important changes, can make the difference between a slick and productive experience, and a sluggish and frustrating one.

GOP Enters Its Henry VIII Stage

Scot Lehigh, Boston Globe
Republicans have reached the Henry VIII stage of pre-primary politics, that state of nagging discontent when, to a restive eye, figures who beckon from afar seem much more desirable than those who are actually at hand.Henry felt that way about his various wives. The GOP ambivalence is every bit as bad when even a bumptious blowhard like Donald Trump floated to the top of GOP favorites, before the rapier of ridicule deflated his trial balloon.

What Inc. Readers Travel With

Apple iPad

What items can't you live without on the road? Inc. asked readers what technology and comforts they can't live without when crossing the country for business travel.

The iPad features a 9.7-inch screen, fingerprint-resistant coating, and a battery life of up to 10 hours while surfing the Web or watching movies. It comes available with a 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB flash drive, as well as 3G connectivity for a monthly fee. COST: Starts at $499.

Dropbox is an online backup, storage, and file-syncing service. It works great in transferring and storing large files that often exceed e-mail capacity. "I love Dropbox, it makes everything accessible," @condo29 tweeted. COST: Free, but priced up to $19.99 per month based on how much storage you need.

"If I need access to my office computer, I use either Sugar Sync or Mozy to browse my office hard drive so I can download the files to my phone," David of Tampa, posted on Ask Inc. COST: Sugar Sync is free up to 5GB; Mozy starts at $5.99 a month.

"I don't take a blanket, as most airlines provide one if you ask, but I do take an inflatable pillow that actually has quite a smooth surface and can be blown up more or less to fit the chair or place where I want to close my eyes for a moment," says Atje Cobbett. Try the Inflatable Travel U-Pillow from Brookstone. COST: $25 at Brookstone.

"Aside from my laptop, another gadget that is on top of my not-to-forget list is my digital camera. I am fond of taking shots of scenic spots that I encounter when I travel, which I will upload on my Flickr account," says Edward Clint. If you are looking for a camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i topped all the Consumer Reports lists. The Rebel features a 15.1 Megapixel sensor, a 3-inch LCD screen with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coating, and an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, which is perfect for any beginner photographer. COST: $700.

The notebook of choice for millions of users, the MacBook features a 13.3-inch glossy widescreen, a 10-hour battery life, a glass multi-touch trackpad, and a built-in webcam. The Macbook weighs less than five pounds and sports a 250GB hard disk drive and a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. "My MacBook Pro ... because I prefer having more screen real estate on longer flights," David responded on Ask Inc. COST: Starting at $999.

The debate continues over which phone is tops. Inc. readers could not decide between the Apple iPhone, the Droid Incredible, and the Blackberry Bold. But they did all agree that staying connected to family, friends, co-workers, and clients is important. COST: Apple iPhone starts at $199; Droid Incredible starts at $199; Blackberry Bold starts at $199.

Best Toiletry Case: Icy Bag

On her wedding day, in the summer of 2002, Kathy Cohen reached into her makeup bag to freshen up and found a red, slimy mess of melted lipstick. Cohen, then a human resources executive at a university, got the idea for a bag designed to chill cosmetics on the go. Cohen sold the first batch of bags at a trade show in 2006 and hired a manufacturer in China. Since then, her Clinton, Connecticut, company, IcyBag, has sold about 10,000 bags at small retailers, on QVC, and at IcyBag.com. Cohen plans to roll out more styles this summer.

COST: $15 to $20 at IcyBag.com.

Bad Weather Is Due to CO2 Emissions

Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker
When President Barack Obama arrived in Joplin, Missouri, on May 29th, the sun was shining. He toured one of the neighborhoods that the previous week’s tornado had destroyed, then spoke at a memorial service for the dead. (By late last week, the official toll was a hundred and thirty-eight people.) At the service, the President’s tone turned brooding. “The question that weighs on us at a time like this is: Why?” he said. “Why our town? Why our home? Why my son, or husband, or wife, or sister, or friend? Why?” Such questions, the...

The Case Against "American Exceptionalism"

Michael Lind, Salon
"There is no denying it: America is the greatest country in the world," according to Herman Cain, former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza and Republican presidential candidate, writing in the March issue of the American Spectator. Cain is upset that President Obama, while in France, did not inform the French and other Europeans that, compared to us, they were inferior and unexceptional: Unfortunately, some politicians have either forgotten or chosen to ignore the glory of our founding. In April 2009, President Obama told a reporter in Strasbourg, France: "I believe in...

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

SeaMonkey, Mozilla's all-in-one Internet suite, releases new beta

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 3
The SeaMonkey Project has released SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 3, a version that makes a lot of new functionality available to a wide audience for the first time. A lot of stuff has been added and tweaked since SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 2 hit the streets back in February, and we're now one step closer to the final release of version 2.1 of the integrated Internet app suite.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 3 lets you enter Safe Mode from the Help menu, and you can permanently apply some of the Safe Mode settings if you so wish. When a plug-in crashes, you're now instantly presented with options, such as reloading the page. Built-in extensions such as ChatZilla, JavaScript debugger, DOM inspector, and DebugQA are now installed by default. SeaMonkey Sync has received an easier setup process, and Windows 7 jump lists are now supported. Also added are detection of outdated plug-ins, WebGL support, an optional search bar (including suggestions for search engines that support them), an engine manager for OpenSearch, and plug-ins now work in feeds shown in MailNews windows.

ChatZilla is working again, as are the JavaScript Debugger Venkman, as well as download progress display in the Windows 7 taskbar. Restoring large browser sessions has been improved, and you can even switch tabs by mouse scrolling.

This being a beta, the obvious warnings apply: stuff may break, bugs may show up everywhere, and generally speaking you probably shouldn't use this version as your daily driver -- at least not from the get-go, without having tested it for a while first.
